NINEJP Holds First IP Roundtable

On July 9, about 40 people from nine university start-up platforms (PFs) across Japan gathered both in-person and online at Tokyo Midtown Yaesu for the "1st NINEJP Intellectual Property Roundtable."
At the roundtable, participants shared information on:
IP support systems of each PF
Progress in the development of regulations
Management methods for patent expenses
Utilization of support menus from JST and INPIT

A frank exchange of opinions was held on practical issues such as the promotion of foreign applications and the operational rules for stock acquisition rights.
The chair, Professor Toshiya Watanabe of the Tokyo University of Science, stated that it is necessary to strengthen the intellectual property foundation, which is indispensable for the global expansion of university-launched startups. He also expressed his aim to create a framework for effective support from this roundtable. He also mentioned that this could lead to more effective information dissemination at international exhibitions related to the biomedical field and address the current challenges pointed out in the patent strategies of Japanese universities.
